WAN Orchestration

The amount of local and wide area network (LAN and WAN) traffic is increasing, year over year, as more and more applications are accessed over the network. Both business critical traffic and other non-critical traffic are increasing and are in direct competition with each other. Enterprises must be able to minimize the impact of non-critical traffic on the business critical traffic. Also, not all business critical traffic is considered equal. Enterprises must be able to balance the needs for applications, cloud services, backups, file transfers, VoIP, and collaboration tools to name a few. A high level of user experience assurance is needed to boost performance and drive productivity.

WAN optimization, network control, and application performance monitoring address these needs and provide assurance of a well functioning network.

• Network control allows network administrators to limit unnecessary traffic, such as social networking or gaming traffic, and to prioritize inbound and outbound traffic based on desired factors. Traffic can be prioritized and de-prioritized by application type, who is accessing the network, and the time of day the request is being made. For example, traffic flowing between a branch office and the head office network can be prioritized over any other traffic. Or synchronous traffic, such as VoIP, can be prioritized over other traffic.
• Network optimization allows network administrators to accelerate particular traffic types, such as CIFS or SMB, between sites or to cache frequently used data.
• Application performance monitoring allows network administrators to monitor the user experience of particular applications, so that they can more quickly recognize, diagnose, and fix issues with particular applications.
